Make a Jogakbo Butterfly with Artist Miryeong Hong
Join artist Miryeong Hong to create a Jogakbo butterfly with 2 pieces of fabric. Jogakbo is a traditional Korean patchwork. Suitable for adult beginners. All supplies provided, but feel free to bring your own sewing tools if you prefer (thimble, sewing scissors, Hera maker, or cutting mat.)
Registration opens two weeks before the class at 9am on 2/8.
This event coincides with the JOGAKBO: Traditional Korean Patchwork exhibit at the Sequoya Library by Hong. The show runs from December 8, 2023 through February, 2024.
Artist Statement:
Inspired by the color-saturated four seasons in my homeland, South Korea, I have made Jogakbo (traditional Korean patchwork) with traditional fabric for sixteen years. With Jogakbo, I focus on various textures and colors that represent distinctive aspects of each season which helped me overcome my homesickness.
Jogakbo is a traditional Korean patchwork embedded with history. ‘Jogak' means 'pieces', 'Bo' means a wrapping bag. Jogakbo's main use is as Bojagi, a traditional Korean wrapping cloth.
Nowadays, Jogakbo can be found as art, lighting, handbags, table linens, and more. Jogakbo allows for a wide range of styles, from traditional to contemporary, and a variety of color palettes and patterns. I want to show diversity within this art form and the versatility of Jogakbo.
